Transesophageal Echocardiography for Liver Transplantation

Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2025

Location: SFITS

Time:

  • 1st Session – 14:00-15:45, Registration limited to 15 participants
  • 2nd Session – 16:15-18:00, Registration limited to 15 participants

Cost:

  • Early Bird – $275
  • Regular – $375

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has become one of the most powerful diagnostic and monitoring tools in modern anesthesiology for liver transplantation. The ability of TEE to provide real-time assessment of cardiac function is indispensable during this complex surgery. Over the next few years, TEE is expected to become a gold standard for intraoperative management in liver transplant procedures worldwide.

This interactive workshop is designed to help you build both confidence and competence in the use of TEE for liver transplantation. It is tailored for anesthesiologists and critical care physicians who are actively involved in the perioperative management of liver transplant patients.

What to Expect
Participants will benefit from a comprehensive and highly practical learning experience, including:

  • Hands-on training in small groups using TEE simulators.
  • Step-by-step guidance on probe manipulation and image acquisition
  • Identification and interpretation of standard echocardiographic views recommended for liver transplantation
  • Application of TEE in critical intraoperative situations.
  • Case-based discussions addressing real-world challenges in liver transplant anesthesia

Special Focus Topics

  • TEE safety and contraindications in patients with advanced liver disease
  • Detection of pulmonary embolism, intracardiac thrombus, and other acute complications
  • Integration of TEE findings into clinical decision-making for improved patient outcomes
  • Review of current guidelines and emerging best practices

Certification
All participants will receive an official ILTS/SATA Certificate of Course Completion, recognizing their participation in this advanced educational program.

We look forward to welcoming you to Geneva!

Course Co-Directors
Dr. Jeron Zerillo

Dr. Jeron Zerillo is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology with a passion for Transesophageal Echocardiography. His research has focused on expanding the routine adoption of TEE for liver transplantation. To this goal, he worked with ILTS to create the TEE workshop at its annual meeting.

Dr. Dmitri Bezinover

Dr. Dmitri Bezinover is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with more than 20 years of experience caring for patients with hepatic failure. He is board-certified in Transesophageal Echocardiography and has worked for several years to establish TEE as an essential diagnostic and management tool in perioperative liver transplantation care. Dr. Bezinover is one of the creators of this course and has been teaching TEE for liver transplantation since this workshop was first introduced into transplant anesthesiology.

Instructors
Dr. Andrew Gold

Dr. Andrew Gold is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is fellowship-trained in critical care and board-certified in both Transesophageal and Critical Care Echocardiography. He serves as Associate Division Chief for Critical Care Medicine and Medical Director of the Surgical ICU. His clinical practice focuses on liver transplantation, integrating advanced echocardiography into high-acuity perioperative and ICU care.

Dr. Rishi Kothari

Dr. Rishi Kothari, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, is a dedicated liver transplant anesthesiologist. He completed a liver transplant anesthesia fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, one of the nation’s leading centers in liver transplantation, and holds basic perioperative echocardiography certification from the National Board of Echocardiography. Dr. Kothari’s regular use of TEE in clinical practice, his involvement in educational sessions both within his institution and across universities, and his active role in resident training provide him with a robust foundation in TEE and medical education.
